" Perjuangan Tak Kenal Batas Waktu... Ia Akan Terus Mengalir Seiring... Berjuang Memang Pahit...

Symphony of Indonesia
Spread of Beauty in Indonesia

The Background
The amazing of Indonesia's scenery and culture was the most interesting object for European painter in 1930s such as Willem Gerard Hofker, Ernest Dezentje, Roland Strasser, etc. Landscape painting had become popular among the Dutch living in Indonesia, who wanted souvenirs of the colony ( Soemantri, 1998 ). This period is known as Mooi Indie ( beautiful Indies ). Some Indonesian painters ie. Abdullah Suryosubroto, Mas Pirngadi, and Wakidi were included in Mooi indie painter.

But the Mooi Indie painters were opposed by the Indonesian Painter's Association ( PERSAGI ) that founded by Sudjojono and Agus Djaja on 23 October 1938. PERSAGI thought that art should be a reflection of a Nation's Aspirations, not only intended to demonstrate the technical ability. In the next period in the development of Indonesian fine art,the PERSAGI painters showed the diversity of Indonesian culture, daily life of low social class people, and other arising nationalism paintings ( ibid, 1998 )

After 1940s, the European influence antered Indonesia through university. The first Indonesian art academy was founded in Bandung in 1947 as part of the Faculty of Technical Sciences. Between teh end of World War II and Indonesia independence ( 1945-1949 ),two dutch artists, Simon Admiraal, who become its first director, and Ries Mulder, planned the teacher-training curriculum in drawing. Because of the academy's cultural connections with Europe and the USA, abstract art was in vogue between 1947 and 1970. At the end of the 1960s the Bandung artists started to connect the international avant garde with Indonesian traditional art, creating a synthesis between East and West.

While abstract art was the dominant art stream in Bandung, some painters continued to paint in a more figurative manner, living and working outside the atmosphere of the art academy of Bandung  Institute of Technology ( ITB ). Barli Sasmitawinata ( 1921-2007 ) was motivated by everyday life around him. His work alternates berween the sentiment of the Mooi Indie style and more personal, lyrical scenes ( Soemantri, 1998 ). He travelled and studied in Europe and the USA during the 1950s. In 1958, he founded the Studio Rangga Gempol and in 2002 founded Bale Seni Barli in Bandung where many local artists studied model, landscape and still-life painting.
